CASE STUDY: Social innovation charity People Know How speaks with 200 visitors at Edinburgh Waverley Station about digital and social inclusion

BACKGROUND

  • People Know How is a Scottish charity that offers a range of support services, placing people at the centre, helping them make their voices heard to improve wellbeing, overcome barriers and solve social issues
  • The charity provides in-person support in Edinburgh and the Lothians and digital support across Scotland by operating the Connecting Scotland helpline

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

  • Engage with passengers in Network Rail’s Edinburgh Waverley Station to raise awareness of the charity’s work and campaign to combat data poverty and the impact digital poverty has on millions of people in the UK
  • Highlight the valuable support of their volunteers as part of UK Volunteers’ Week (3rd to 9th June 2024)
  • Educate the public on the free Connecting Scotland digital support helpline (0800 0 590 690) Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm
  • Trial engaging with the public using a face-to-face promotion

EXECUTION

  • People Know How held a one-day promotional event at the busy Edinburgh Waverley Station through Activate!, a Network Rail and SpaceandPeople initiative to enable not-for-profit organisations to raise awareness of their causes
  • Volunteers from the charity were on site to speak with the public and disseminate helpful materials outlining the digital services available

RESULTS

  • The team held a successful promotional event at Edinburgh Waverley, speaking with 200 people during the day and handing out materials to members of the public
  • Footfall on the day of the promotion was 78,062
